The West Moberly First Nations Historical Society is responsible for documenting cultural and historical information about West Moberly First Nations (WMFN). In this diverse and rewarding role, reporting to the Board of Directors, you are the front-line person for all aspects of the organization and integral to the operational success and future of the Society. In overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Society, you will bring your exceptional leadership, organizational skills, and management experience to meet our vision and goals. As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for these key functions:
• Vision and Mission: Develop and maintain activities that work toward the vision of the Society, within the guidelines set by the Board.
• Program Delivery and Development: Provide leadership to contractors in developing and maintaining activities that fulfill the mandate and further the Society’s ongoing goals and objectives. Provide regular and timely information to the Board.
• Admin, HR and Contract Management: Monitor and coordinate all contractors for the Society, ensuring that deliverables are met.
• Financial Management and Compliance: Ensure adequate control and accounting of funds, including developing and maintaining sound financial practices.
• Fundraising: Monitor grant applications and ensure all reasonable opportunities for funding are pursued and applied for in a timely manner.

PURPOSE
The West Moberly First Nations Historical Society (the “Society”) is a registered BC society wholly owned and operated by West Moberly First Nations (“WMFN”). The Society’s purpose is to:
1. Research cultural and historical material about WMFN and its people; and
2. Seek funding to support that research, and, where authorized, to support publication or other processes that make WMFN cultural and historical material accessible.
The Executive Director is responsible for leading, planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the overall management of all day-to-day operations of the Society. This position is responsible for monitoring all projects and contracts and coordinating the flow of information into and out of the Society, working closely with the Board (made up of the four Councillors of West Moberly First Nations’ government). This position is responsible for finding the funding necessary to provide the research and service delivery identified and approved by Board.
Vision and Mission
• Collaborates with the Board in reviewing and confirming the vision and mission
• Demonstrates a clear understanding and belief in the vision and mission of the Society
• Develops and maintains activities that work toward the vision, within the guidelines set by the Board
• Serves as an effective spokesperson for the Society; represents the point of view of the Society to funders, donors, other organizations and the general public
• Establishes sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with governments, community groups and other organizations, including West Moberly First Nations (WMFN) departments and other WMFN affiliates
Program Development and Delivery
• Ensures the Society has operational plans to help achieve its mission
• Provides leadership to contractors and staff (if any) in developing and maintaining activities that fulfill the mandate and further the Society’s ongoing goals and objectives
• Ensures evaluation of activities to determine if goals and objectives have been met
• Provides relevant and timely information to the Board
• Sees that the Board is kept informed on the condition of the Society
• Works effectively with the Board as a whole
Admin, HR and Contract Management
• Monitors and coordinates all contractors for the Society, ensuring that deliverables are met, and regular communications occur and are documented
• Ensures fair and transparent procurement practices
• Ensures fair and transparent hiring practices
• Ensures that job descriptions are developed and maintained, and that regular performance evaluations are held and documented
• Ensures compliance with contractual obligations, and relevant laws regarding workplaces and employment
• Ensures employees are credentialed as required, and appropriate checks are complete
• Encourages and supports staff development and education
• Maintains a climate which attracts and retains highly qualified staff
Financial Management and Compliance
• Ensures adequate control and accounting of all funds, including developing and maintaining sound financial practices
• Assesses risks to the Society’s financial security and growth
• Works with the Board in preparing a budget and sees that the Society operates within budget guidelines
• Ensures that all required records and documents are produced and maintained, and ensures compliance with relevant laws and reporting requirements
• Ensures that funds are disbursed in accordance with contract requirements
Fundraising
• Ensures the development and implementation of realistic fundraising plans
• Establishes positive relationships with funders
• Monitors grant applications, and ensures all reasonable opportunities for funding are pursued and applied for in a timely manner
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education and Work Experience:
• Post-secondary education in Business or Public Administration or related field.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Senior Administration or Management position, with exposure to building a strategic plan and budget.
• Exposure to policies and programs relevant to First Nations communities and their challenges.
• Superior skills at proposal writing, budgeting, reporting and networking.
• Understanding of First Nations Community genealogy, traditions, culture and history.
• Able to work as a problem solver, with strong conflict resolution, negotiation and mediation skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Understanding principles of reconciliation and implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
• Knowledge of, and respect for WMFN history, traditions and culture
• Knowledge of leadership and management principles
• Knowledge of human resources and project management
• Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
• Contract management, grant management and fiscal management
• Intermediate skills using a variety of computerized software packages such as Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint), related databases and Internet
• Valid driver’s license, insurance & reliable transportation
• Willingness to complete Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector check
• Ability to speak Cree or Dunne-za an asset

• Make Decisions: Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the Society.
• Organize: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities
• Plan: Determine strategies to move the Society forward, set goals, create and implement plans, and evaluate the process and results.
• Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve.
WORKING CONDITIONS
• The Executive Director usually work in an office environment at WMFN Culture Cabin, but the mission of the Society may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces.
• The Executive Director works a standard work week, but may additionally work evening, weekends, and overtime to accommodate Board meetings and events.

Status Excluded Position, 1-Year Term
Wage Rate $60-$75/hr base on experience
